About HomiesAbroad

HomiesAbroad helps people find a room and a roommate in a country they haven't lived in yet, whether for university, work, or a fresh start abroad.

Why we built this

Moving abroad for university or work means finding housing sight unseen, in a rental market with its own norms, before you've met a single local person to ask. Most housing still gets found through word of mouth or scattered Facebook groups: hard to search, easy to miss, and impossible to browse from another country's time zone.

We built HomiesAbroad so that search is a page you can open, not a group you have to already be in.

How it works

Post a room you have, or a room you need, completely free. Browse listings near your university or city, and message people directly in-app so your contact details stay private until you choose to share them.

We also read public posts from local housing groups and show a short, honestly labeled summary of each one, with a link back to the original. That way you see more of what's actually available in a city without having to join every group yourself. When a new listing fits what you're looking for, we email you.

What we don't do

We don't verify who anyone is, inspect any property, or guarantee that a listing is accurate. Online or off, that's true of any housing marketplace, and we'd rather say so plainly than let a badge imply otherwise. Video-tour a room and meet a roommate over a call before you send anyone money, the same as you would in person.

We don't sell your contact information, and we don't ask for photos, religion, nationality, or any other filter beyond the practical facts of a room: budget, move-in date, lease length, and the like.

Where we are today

HomiesAbroad is a new, small platform, growing one city at a time. The United States came first, and Canada, Australia and New Zealand are growing alongside it. That means some cities have more listings than others right now. We'd rather be upfront about being early than pretend otherwise.
