Privacy Policy

What we collect

Account data: your email address, first and last name, and anything you optionally add to your profile (hometown, about, photo, display-only gender, community).

Content you create: listings you post, saved searches, bookmarks, and in-app messages.

Usage data: pages you visit, search queries, and device information (browser type, screen size, IP address) to operate and improve the service. We do not build advertising profiles from this data.

We never store government-issued identity documents. We do not collect the identities of people whose public posts we summarize.

How we use it

To run the service: displaying listings, ranking curated posts from public housing groups that are relevant to you, enabling in-app messaging, and sending you email alerts when a new listing is a potential fit for what you are looking for.

Transactional messages (sign-in codes, message notifications) are always sent. Non-transactional email (new-listing alerts and curated updates) is sent only with your express consent, which you can withdraw at any time from your profile or via the unsubscribe link in any email.

Curated posts from public groups

We read public housing groups on Facebook and present short, neutral summaries with a direct link to the original post. We store a summary and a link, never copied text, images, or screenshots, and never the poster's name or contact details.

If you are the author of a summarized post and want it removed, use the Content removal page. We honor valid requests, keep a permanent record of removed-post links so they are never summarized again, and delete the details of your request after 30 days.

Cookies and local storage

We use essential cookies and browser local storage to keep you signed in, remember your recent searches, and store interface preferences. We do not use third-party tracking cookies or advertising pixels.

Third-party services

We use Google Places to resolve location searches, Supabase for authentication and data storage, and Cloudflare for content delivery and media storage. Each of these services may process limited personal data (such as your IP address) as part of providing their service. We do not sell or share your personal information with advertisers.

Data security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (TLS), secure authentication, and access controls on our infrastructure. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we take reasonable steps to safeguard the information you entrust to us.

United States addendum

Consistent with applicable US state privacy laws (including the CCPA/CPRA), you may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information. We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for automated decision-making that produces legal effects.

Canada addendum (PIPEDA)

We handle personal information in line with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy laws. You may request access to, or correction of, the personal information we hold about you, and withdraw consent to non-transactional email at any time. Curated summaries of public posts never include a poster's name or contact details.

Australia addendum (APP)

We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles. You may request access to or correction of the personal information we hold about you. Curated summaries of public posts are kept strictly neutral and factual.

New Zealand addendum (Privacy Act 2020)

We handle personal information in line with New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020 and its Information Privacy Principles. You may request access to, or correction of, the personal information we hold about you. Curated summaries of public posts are kept strictly neutral and factual.

Children's privacy

HomiesAbroad is not directed at anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Retention and deletion

You can delete your account at any time from your profile page. When you do, your profile, listings, and photos are removed from the service and are no longer visible to anyone, and people you chatted with see you as "Deleted user". We retain a private record of the account and its content for as long as needed for safety, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, and legal obligations; it is not shown to other users. The same applies when you delete a single listing, photo, or video: it is removed from the service and kept only as a private record. Content-removal request details are purged after 30 days; the removed-post link list is kept permanently to prevent re-summarization.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the date at the top of the page. Continued use of the service after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
