Student fares
Metro U-Pass for fall 2026 costs $55 (valid 8/10/26 to 1/24/27) for undergraduates taking 6 or more units and graduates taking 3 or more, sold at the AS Ticket Office in the University Student Union.
Car
Many students drive because the Valley is spread out. If you rent within a mile or two of campus, a bike plus the U-Pass covers most trips.

What it costs

Room in a shared place
About $1,150–1,440/mo for a room in a shared three-bedroom near CSUN, derived from HUD FY2026 Small Area FMRs for three-bedrooms ($3,460–4,310) divided by three
Studio or 1-bedroom
HUD FY2026 Small Area FMRs: about $2,190–2,730/mo for a one-bedroom in the ZIP codes around campus

Under California Civil Code 1950.5 as changed by AB 12, deposits are limited to one month's rent for most landlords from July 1, 2024, and two months only for small individual owners with no more than two properties and four units. An itemized statement and any refund are due within 21 days of move-out.
Good to know
Fees with other names, such as a cleaning or move-in fee, count toward California's deposit cap; only the application screening fee is treated separately.

Before you move

  1. When to start looking

Most students line up fall housing between spring and early summer, and rooms near campus get scarce by July. Join the campus housing waitlist as soon as you are admitted, and look privately at the same time.

  2. Your first weeks

Book a hotel or short-term rental in Northridge for the first week so you can view rooms by bike or bus. Buy the Metro U-Pass early, since it covers trips across Los Angeles County while you search.

  3. Watch out for

Many rooms near CSUN are in single-family homes split among several tenants. Insist on a written lease or sublease that names you, because a verbal room deal leaves you with little protection if the head tenant leaves.

Questions about renting near California State University, Northridge

What do rooms near California State University, Northridge cost on HomiesAbroad right now?

23 rooms are listed right now, at a median of $1,275/mo (from $1,050 to $1,650).

Can I live near CSUN without a car?

Yes, if you choose your area carefully. Northridge streets around campus are bikeable, and the Metro U-Pass costs $55 for fall 2026 for eligible students. Metro Bus 167, Metro Rapid lines and a CSUN shuttle from the Northridge Metrolink station all serve the CSUN Transit Station on Vincennes Street. That station is closed on weekends, so weekend trips take more planning.

Is CSUN campus housing hard to get?

It is limited. CSUN has about 3,500 beds, all shared-occupancy, in the Park Apartments and Suites next to campus, and it opened a waitlist for 2026-27. Joining is free through the Student Housing Portal. Because demand outstrips space, most students also search off campus at the same time rather than waiting for a waitlist offer.

How much is a room in Northridge?

HUD's FY2026 Small Area Fair Market Rents for three-bedrooms around CSUN range from $3,460 in North Hills to $4,310 in parts of Northridge, which works out to roughly $1,150 to $1,440 per bedroom if split three ways. Many students share a bedroom to go lower. One-bedrooms in the same ZIP codes sit between about $2,190 and $2,730.

Is Reseda too far from CSUN?

Not usually. Reseda borders Northridge to the south, and Reseda Boulevard runs straight up toward campus, with Metro Rapid service on it to the CSUN Transit Station. HUD's FY2026 small-area rent for a three-bedroom in Reseda's 91335 ZIP code is $3,740, a bit below the campus ZIP, so it is a common choice for students who want lower rent.

How many people are looking for a room or roommate near California State University, Northridge?

20 people have an open housing request here. Their median budget is $1,388/mo.
