Getting around

- Car
- All CCS students may bring a car and park free in the CCS parking structure; residents can park there around the clock. Many Detroit trips beyond Woodward are much easier by car.
What it costs
- Room in a shared place
- About $450–540/mo for a room in a shared three-bedroom in the neighbourhoods around CCS, derived from HUD FY2026 Small Area FMRs for three-bedrooms ($1,360–1,620) divided by three; Downtown runs higher
- Studio or 1-bedroom
- HUD FY2026 Small Area FMRs for a one-bedroom: $990/mo in Midtown (48201), $1,030/mo in New Center (48202), $1,690/mo Downtown (48226)
- Bills
- Heating is a real winter cost in Detroit's older houses; ask whether gas heat is included before comparing rents.
- Also budget for
- CCS on-campus housing in 2026-27 costs $8,540 a year at the Taubman Center, which also requires a meal plan, and $8,720–8,940 a year in the Ford campus apartments.
Leases and deposits
- Lease
- Private leases in Midtown and New Center usually run 12 months; the CCS housing lease covers September classes through move-out in May, and residents must leave over winter break.
- Deposit
- Michigan law caps the security deposit at one and a half months' rent. You must receive move-in inventory checklists, and after you leave the landlord has 30 days to return the deposit or send an itemized list of damages, provided you gave a forwarding address within 4 days of moving out.
- Good to know
- Detroit landlords must register rentals and pass a city inspection, and tenants in non-compliant properties can pay rent into escrow. Look the address up on the city's Rental Compliance Map before you sign.
Campus housing
CCS houses most first-year students in the Taubman Center's loft-style rooms for three to four people, and also offers apartment-style units for four or six at the Ford campus. Housing is first-come, first-served; once full, students go on a waitlist that gives priority to out-of-state students, and CCS points waitlisted students to the Midtown off-campus listings.

When to start looking
Apply for CCS housing as soon as you are admitted, because rooms go in order of application. Private leases near Wayne State and CCS turn over mainly in summer before the September start.
Your first weeks
If you have a CCS housing place, you move in before classes start in September, so temporary housing is rarely needed. Without one, book a short stay in Midtown or New Center near the QLINE and view rooms in person.
Watch out for
On-campus residents cannot stay over winter break without arranging it with the Housing Office in advance. International students with nowhere to go should ask early.

What do rooms near College for Creative Studies cost on HomiesAbroad right now?
3 rooms are listed right now, at a median of $1,400/mo (from $1,300 to $1,425).
Which CCS campus should I live near?
Live near where your classes are. The Taubman Center in New Center holds the main first-year residence hall and many classes, while the Walter and Josephine Ford campus is in Midtown about a mile south. The free QLINE streetcar on Woodward Avenue connects the two every 15 minutes or so, so either area works without a car.
How much does CCS housing cost compared with renting privately?

What happens if CCS housing is full?
Students who apply after housing fills go onto a waitlist, and out-of-state applicants get priority. Waitlisted students are contacted if a space opens, but CCS advises them to start searching off campus straight away using the Midtown Detroit housing listings. Midtown, New Center and Woodbridge are the usual choices because they sit near the QLINE.
What deposit rules apply in Detroit?
Michigan caps deposits at one and a half months' rent. Fill in and return the move-in inventory checklist within 7 days, and give a written forwarding address within 4 days of moving out. The landlord then has 30 days to refund the deposit or send an itemized damage list, and you must reply to that list within 7 days to dispute it.
