Roommates & housing near Louisiana State University for international students
Off-campus students at LSU in Baton Rouge mostly rent in the apartment complexes along Burbank Drive, Nicholson Drive and Tigerland, all on Tiger Trails bus routes. First-year students must live on campus, so off-campus demand comes from older and graduate students. HUD's FY2026 Baton Rouge three-bedroom benchmark of $1,511 is about $504 per bedroom.

Living near Louisiana State University: a newcomer's guide
Where to live
Areas students rent in, nearest first
Nicholson Drive corridor
Newer student complexes stretch south from campus along Nicholson Dr, plus LSU's own Nicholson Gateway Apartments at the campus edge. Closest to class, priced accordingly.
- Commute
- Walk, or Nicholson - Ben Hur route every 15 min
Burbank Drive
A long strip of apartment complexes south of campus, many rented by the bedroom with two to four bedrooms per unit. Popular with graduate students who want a bus line and parking.
- Commute
- Burbank - Ben Hur or Highland-Burbank routes, 14–15 min headways
Tigerland
Cheaper older apartments east of campus around the Tigerland bar strip. Good value, but late-night noise from undergraduates is part of the deal.
- Commute
- Tigerland A and B routes, about every 36 min
Highland Road and the Garden District
Houses and small apartment buildings on oak-lined streets north and east of campus. Quieter and more residential; the Garden District bus only runs hourly, so many residents drive or bike.
- Commute
- Garden District route, 60-min headway
Getting around
LSU's Tiger Trails runs weekday off-campus routes from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM in fall and spring: Burbank - Ben Hur, Nicholson - Ben Hur, Highland-Burbank, Tigerland A and B, and Garden District. After 6 PM the Night A route and an app-based On Demand service take over, and a Sunday Shuttle runs hourly.
- Car
- Baton Rouge is spread out and much easier with a car, especially for groceries and anywhere beyond the Tiger Trails area. Expect heavy rush-hour traffic on I-10 and I-12 on weekdays from about 4 to 6:30 PM.
What it costs
- Room in a shared place
- About $504/mo per bedroom, derived from HUD's FY2026 Baton Rouge three-bedroom Fair Market Rent of $1,511 split three ways (includes a utility allowance)
- Studio or 1-bedroom
- HUD FY2026 Fair Market Rent for Baton Rouge: $1,032/mo studio, $1,064/mo one-bedroom
- Bills
- Summer air-conditioning makes electricity the biggest variable bill; per-bedroom student complexes often cap or bundle it, while private landlords usually do not.
Leases and deposits
- Lease
- Baton Rouge student complexes run on 12-month leases timed to the August start of fall semester; rising sophomores leaving the dorms create the main wave of demand each spring.
- Deposit
- Louisiana R.S. 9:3251 has no cap on the deposit. It must be returned within one month after the lease ends, and if anything is kept, the landlord has to send an itemized statement with reasons; a 2026 amendment allows that statement up to 15 days after the one-month mark. You must give a forwarding address when the lease ends.
- Good to know
- Moving out early without the notice your lease requires, or abandoning the unit, removes the one-month refund protection under Louisiana law.
Campus housing
All first-year students must live on campus unless exempt, for example by being 21 or older or married by the first day of fall classes. Upper-level students can choose East Campus, Nicholson Gateway or West Campus Apartments, but the housing site lists no dedicated graduate or family housing, so most graduate students rent off campus. LSU publishes an off-campus housing listing service, and the Global Community Center offers a roommate search for international students.

When to start looking
LSU's academic year starts in August, so Baton Rouge complexes lease up through spring and early summer. Exemption requests from the first-year live-on rule are due October 1 of the term, which matters if you arrive in your first year planning to rent.
Your first weeks
Book a short hotel stay near campus and view apartments by car or ride-hail, since the Tiger Trails daytime routes stop at 6 PM. Avoid arriving on a home football weekend: buses do not run on gamedays and roads around campus switch to one-way traffic.
Watch out for
Low-lying ground-floor units in Baton Rouge can flood in heavy rain, so ask for an upstairs unit or ask the complex directly about its flooding history before signing.
Questions about renting near Louisiana State University
What do rooms near Louisiana State University cost on HomiesAbroad right now?
13 rooms are listed right now, at a median of $1,050/mo (from $500 to $1,375).
Do graduate students at LSU have to live on campus?
No. The live-on requirement applies to first-year students, and exemptions also cover anyone 21 or older, married, or with dependent children. LSU's housing options page lists East Campus, Nicholson Gateway and West Campus Apartments for rising sophomores and beyond but no graduate-specific building, so ask Residential Life at [email protected] or 225-578-8663 whether a graduate space is available before you look off campus.
Can I get to campus at night without a car?
Partly. Daytime Tiger Trails routes end at 6:00 PM. Night A then runs Monday to Saturday until midnight about every 45 minutes, Night Express runs Thursday to Saturday late evenings, and an app-based On Demand service covers set zones from 5 PM to midnight in fall and spring. Nothing runs on university holidays or home football gamedays, and the On Demand service stops in summer.
Which Tiger Trails routes changed for 2026-27?
From July 1, 2026, the Nicholson - River Road A and B routes were merged into Tigerland A and B, Night D was merged into Night A, and Night Express West merged with Night Express East. Reduced-service days, such as summer and intersessions, now end at 5:30 PM. If an older lease ad promises a specific bus route, check the current Tiger Trails page before relying on it.
What happens if my Louisiana landlord does not send an itemized statement?
Under R.S. 9:3251, a landlord who keeps any part of a deposit must forward an itemized statement giving the reasons, within one month after the tenancy ends or within the 15 days after that, a window added by a 2026 amendment. Send your forwarding address in writing when you leave. The protection does not apply if you abandon the premises or leave without giving the notice your lease requires.
How many people are looking for a room or roommate near Louisiana State University?
3 people have an open housing request here. Their median budget is $650/mo. The most common move-in month is October 2026 (2 requests), so that is when competition for rooms peaks.
